Turning steel slag and CO₂ into valuable materials

We are developing an integrated process that converts steelmaking slag and CO₂ into precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and low-carbon cementitious binders

Solution

Turning steelmaking side streams into two industrial materials

LithoBind is an integrated solution that recovers value from selected steelmaking slag by mineralizing it into PCC. The solution then turns the remaining PCC residue mineral stream into a cementitious binder material

For partners

Partner with us to build our demo plant

We are gathering and preparing the initial partner group for our first LithoBind demo plant. The demo plant is intended to validate our process in terms of technology and business enabling us to move to industrial scale and beyond

We are looking for partners in steel producers, PCC producers, and cement & concrete producers

Partner benefits

Reduced emissions translating to reduced carbon costs

Reduced waste handling costs

We're looking to collaborate on:

Slag feedstock validation
Site integration and requirement knowledge
Potential demo plant site hosting

Partner benefits

Local, sustainable source of PCC with a competitive production cost

We're looking to collaborate on:

Application specifications
Material characterization
Customer-specific qualification
Potential interest for offtake

Partner benefits

Local, sustainable source of cementitious binder with a competitive production cost

Can support sustainable building certification

We're looking to collaborate on:

Material testing and requirements
Validation in relevant product settings
Potential interest for offtake

TECHNOLOGY

Two linked technologies being developed into an integrated solution based on research at Aalto University.

01

Steel slag-to-PCC technology

Stage: Validated in a pilot environment

Calcium extraction from steelmaking slag and producing precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), developed +20 years of research at Aalto University and covered by granted patents.

NEXTTesting suitable feedstocks and the process at a demonstration scale
02

PCC residue-to-cementitious material technology

Stage: Standardized performance testing underway

Conversion of the remaining PCC residue mineral stream into a cementitious material. Covered by a patent application filed in 2025. Standardized performance testing is ongoing against relevant standards, with certification and market-entry route under assessment.

NEXTFinishing standardized testing, deepening validation for the most promising use cases
